CURRENT STATUS

The T1D cure has crossed from theory into human proof. Teplizumab (Tzield) is FDA-approved and delays clinical onset by a median of ~2 years in at-risk relatives. Vertex's stem cell-derived islets (zimislecel / VX-880) have produced insulin independence in the majority of fully dosed trial participants at one year β€” a functional cure in early patients β€” at the cost of chronic immunosuppression.
