CURRENT STATUS
The T1D cure has crossed from theory into human proof. Teplizumab (Tzield) is FDA-approved and delays clinical onset by a median of ~2 years in at-risk relatives. Vertex's stem cell-derived islets (zimislecel / VX-880) have produced insulin independence in the majority of fully dosed trial participants at one year β a functional cure in early patients β at the cost of chronic immunosuppression. An encapsulated, immunosuppression-free version (VX-264) and gene-edited "hypoimmune" islets are in earlier trials, while automated insulin-delivery systems already deliver near-normal glucose control today.

A pivotal trial of zimislecel β fully differentiated islet cells made from stem cells and infused into the liver to restore the bodyβs own insulin production. In reported data, 10 of 12 fully dosed participants became insulin-independent at one year and all were free of severe hypoglycemic events β a functional cure in early patients. Requires chronic immunosuppression.
