Biology is becoming something you can compute. Robots run the pipettes now. Assays return results by the million. Models read those results and propose the next experiment before a person has finished reading the last one. The place where discovery actually happens has moved, quietly, onto silicon.
The bench does not disappear in that move. It becomes the instruction set. A physical experiment is the lowest operation a biological programmer can issue, the opcode a machine executes and reports back on, and everything above it is software.
What is missing is the language in between. Our tools read a genome the way a text editor reads a novel: as characters, in a row, with no idea what they mean. Living systems are not strings. They fold. They regulate. They run on an energy budget. They carry the memory of everything that survived before them. Until software treats those as real objects rather than annotations, we are writing assembly for a machine nobody has described.
We have been grafting old computing habits onto life and calling the result bioinformatics. So the data sits still. Repositories hold decades of hard, careful, expensive work in a form that cannot reason about lineage, cannot see epigenetic context, cannot feel a thermodynamic constraint. We call diseases intractable while the evidence that might break them sits inert in memory, waiting for a question no one has typed.
It should never sit still. Those repositories should be under continuous exploration, searched without pause for the patterns, the regulatory logic and the targets that no human has had the hours to go looking for. There is no good reason for a compute cycle anywhere on earth to idle while people die of things the published record may already answer. Research is not an archive. It is unspent fuel.
The transistor made information exact. The internet made it everyone’s. Software made execution something you could abstract and hand to anyone.
